5/19 Reflection

Reflection: How can authentic learning tools improve student engagement and deepen learning? What does the apprenticeship model tell us about learning?

The answer to the first question is when you are able to provide students with authentic learning tools, that they can put into their hands and use. You are able to enroll them into a learning experience that they see real value and opportunities for applications. When this happens you have them engaged and you just need to stand out of their way and let the learning experience begin. Students who can experience this type of real, relevant and personal learning can create knowledge about that experience and its process. They they will be able to transfer that knowledge into other subject areas.

The apprenticeship model tell us that if we create opportunities for students to engage in real life learning experiences in the work place, under the tutelage of a mentor. We find that these students flourish with excitement and find an inter drive to learn more. They seem to draw from the passion of the expert and become excited about the process also.
